September is Healthy Aging Month. With summer behind us, fall is the perfect time to really evaluate your skin and skincare regimen especially if you have been neglecting your skin throughout the summer. You can tell a lot about a person’s age, health, and lifestyle habits by looking at their skin. It is the first thing most people notice and it has to hold up against the elements which is why it deserves a little extra attention. Board-Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Bethany Hairston has five tips to share to help your skin thrive throughout the year.

  1. Sunscreen

Apply sunscreen every day. For optimal daily protection, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen to defend against UVA and UVB rays that cause sunburns, dark spots, wrinkles, premature skin damage, and skin cancer. SPF 30 or higher is great for daily use. You can use a sheer formula on its own or under makeup. You can also use a tinted formula on its own instead of a heavy foundation.

The neck, chest, and hands are often forgotten when applying sunscreen, but they receive a considerable amount of sun exposure. Be sure to apply sunscreen in these areas to prevent signs of aging and sun damage.

If you need help choosing the right sunscreen, be sure to watch out latest video where the Vitality Dermatology providers discuss how to protect your skin and how to choose a correct sunscreen. If you have additional questions, call our office for an appointment.

  1. Cleansing

You should always wash your face before bedtime. Sleeping with dirty skin or makeup on clogs pores, prevents the skin’s natural renewal process, and prematurely ages the skin. You should be using a cleanser based on your individual skin type. If you have dry skin, typically a cream or oil cleanser will be best. For oily or acne prone skin, a foaming cleanser or cleanser with Glycolic or Salicylic Acid will work well. If you have combination skin, you can try a cream to foam cleanser.

Choosing the right products for your skin can be tricky. Check out our online store to see the products we love for each skin type!

  1. Exfoliating

Exfoliation promotes healthy skin turnover and helps rejuvenate a dull complexion. Tretinoin (Retin-A) is one of the most powerful skin care products to fight aging skin and is the perfect product to help your skin’s turnover. Many studies as well as patient experiences have shown these results:

  • Tretinoin has proven itself to reduce, reverse and prevent wrinkles. The younger a person starts using it (meaning in their teens and twenties) the more benefits they receive. But, it’s never too late to start using it!
  • Tretinoin helps lighten and prevent age spots.
  • Tretinoin builds collagen to thicken and increase the structural strength of treated skin.
  1. Eye Cream

An eye cream refers to a cream that is specifically formulated to be applied to the skin around the eyelid to target undereye concerns. It is an effective addition to your skincare routine if you have specific under-eye issues you're hoping to correct.

Always apply eye cream gently, avoiding tugging at the delicate skin under the eyes. The first signs of aging on the face typically appear in the areas around the eyes, everyone can benefit from using an eye cream. Regardless of your age, preventative skin care will help your skin age well in years to come.

  1. Annual Skin Exam

One of the most important things you can do to help your skin is to have an annual skin exam with a board-certified dermatologist. Yearly exams will help detect skin cancer and any other concerns in early stages. It is also a great time to consult with the experts about any products or treatments you can utilize to help keep your skin healthy.
